The Family History Society of Buchan is taking part in this years Scottish Week in Peterhead. Scottish Week runs from the 18th to the 26th July and is a fun filled week of entertainment for all ages. Scottish Week is a series of cultural events that take place every Summer i - See the Scottish Week Website for further information On Saturday 18th July the FHSB are taking part in this years Peterhead Heritage Fair at the Central School. The theme of this years event is "Around our Coast", and we will have a display of photographs from many of the local coastal villages. Copies of which can be ordered. Our popular bookstall will also be there, and this year we are using the Fair to launch two new titles to our range of publications. "Peterhead Street Names" by David M Bertie is the result of several years research into the origins and derivations of the street names of Peterhead, past and present. The book is a treasure trove for the family historian trying to discover the whereabouts of streets which no longer exist, but which can be found in old birth, marriage, death and census records. "Peterhead's "Palaces for the People" - The Prefabs, 1947 - 1963" by Doug McDonald charts the history of those homes from when they were built until they were demolished to make way for more modern housing. The book gives an insight into the houses, the community and the families who occupied these homes over the years.
From Monday to Friday the FHSB will be at Arbuthnot House. As last year we will have a display and members will be on hand to offer help to family researchers and advice to those just starting out. We will also have our local registrar on hand to give short "taster sessions" on their Digros system, which is similar to the Scotland's People website. Again our bookstall will be available. We will be open to the public from 10.30am till 1pm and from 2pm until 4.30pm each day. In addition, this year we are also facilitating a display of civic photographs. These recently discovered photographs chart the history of Peterhead Town Council from its beginnings in 1833 to its demise in 1975 when local government reform brought in the Regional and District Councils. The Collection includes photographs of all the Provosts of Peterhead and several of the Town Council at various periods in the past.
The Society will also be represented at an aevent in the Peterhead Port Authority Auction Hall. Along with the Glenugie Historical Society, local artist George Strachan, author Donald Anderson and MArgie Davidson will be taking part in a special Homecoming programme. On display will be a collection of photographs, portraits and model boats spanning 400 years of local culture, tradition and maritime history. There will also be a showing of films depicting Old Peterhead.
Finally to round off the week, we will be hosting a guided walk around the Constitution Street Cemetery in Peterhead on Sunday 26th July. The tour starts at 2pm and will be held hourly until 4pm. This cemetery, which opened in July 1869 contains 5,277 graves. On our walk we will point out the graves of many of Peterhead's former civic heads, men of industry and commerce, as well as others who were not so well known. There are also many ornate gravestones, much different from those of today.
We would like to point out for anyone reading the Scottish Week Programme, that there is an error in it and we are not conducting a tour around St Peter's Churchyard this year. Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may be thinking of joining the tour mentioned in the Programme for the 19th July. The only tour is the one mentioned above to Constitution Street Cemetery
