13 Jul -09 - FHSB Database Index Update

FHSBLogo Due to the release of the Constitution Street MI’s CD-rom a further 9500 records have been added to the FHSB database bringing the total to over 16000 records. The index for the database is located in the Members’ Area of this Website and access is free to all FHSB members. The full database is held in the FHC in Peterhead and members may access it themselves or contact the FHC and ask for the details of a record to be forwarded to them. The major contributions are the indexes of St Peter’s and Constitution St MIs and the Ancestral Charts submitted by our Members

Also, great family articles about Mary Forbes of Invernettie and Anna Smith of The Broch plus lots, lots more. (There’s even a photograph of a grey-haired man impersonating me). Past issues are available to members via the members’ area as normal

 

10 Jul 09 - FHSB first Book - Peterhead Street Names

1 Jul 09 - Scottish Week 2009

Royal FlagThe FHSB is pleased to announce that we are hosting a number of events during Scottish Week in Peterhead. See us at Arbuthnut House, Churchyard walk and at the Peterhead Port Authority Auction Hall. Click here for details. All FHSB members should note that the Scottish Week programme has an error. The Graveyard walk on the 26th July will be at CONSTITUTION Street Cemetery and not St Peter’s as advertised

FHSBLogoFiona Jane Brown of the Aberdeen & Region Oral History Association will be the guest speaker at the Next Open Meeting to be held on the 25 Jun 09 at 19:00hrs at Arbuthnot House, Broad Street, Peterhead. All members and prospective members are most welcome. This highly anticipated presentation will be followed by refreshments and a mingle. The normal pictures, books and CD’s will be available.

12 May 09 - Open Meeting - Aberdeen Around the world

FHSBLogoAn excellent presentation by Fred Bull about all the towns around the world named Aberdeen. Fred enlightened the membership on how each of the 35 towns named Aberdeen were named and their links back to the original Aberdeen. Prior to the presentation Cllr Stuart Pratt of Aberdeenshire Council presented the Awards For All award to the FHSB.

 

6 May 09 - Awards for All Grant

HI_AWARDS_CMYKThe Family History Society of Buchan has been boosted with the news that the “Awards for All”, part of the Big Lottery Fund has awarded the FHSB an award of over £9000 to purchase new microfilms - more details to follow soon.

4 May 09 - Open Meeting (11 May 09) - Aberdeens

AberdeenskylineAn illustrated talk on the number of towns and cities around the world named Aberdeen will be given at our next Open Meeting. Guest speaker Fred Bull, who has written a book on the subject, will make the presentation at 7pm on Monday, May 11 at Arbuthnot House, Broad Street, Peterhead - All members and non-members are welcome.

3 March 09 - Jacobite Muster Document.

jacobiteThe FHSB has obtained a copy the complete Muster roll of the Jacobites that fought at Culloden. This document listed every ‘soldier’ by name, what happened to them, and the regiment they fought with. It often contains the hometown and occupation of each Jacobite. Additionally the FHSB has the Tilbury Prison Roll that lists the punishment each captured ‘rebel’ received while imprisoned in Tilbury. A must for all Scottish family historians. Until copyright ownership can be verified the document is only available to view at the FHC. Non local members - please contact the FHC by email with any queries about this document

28 Feb 09 - AGM Venue confirmation

Note: Arbuthnot House not Arbuthnot Museum.All Members and prospective members are most welcome. Following the AGM will be a members clinic where members can seek advice on their research

 

25 Feb 09 - Your Family History Recognises FHSB

TFH The April 09 edition of the the highly respected “Your Family Tree” Magazine remarks on the establishment of Scotland’s newest family history society. Only a short paragraph but other magazines have taken an interest in the recent Official opening conducted by the Rt Hon Alex Salmond MP MSP. so watch out for futher news

18 Jan 09 Open Meeting - Change of Speaker

meetingFiona Watson from the Hospital Records has kindly agreed to replace Peter Mennie as the guest speaker for the 19th. This will be a very informative talk with Fiona outlining the available records from the Hospital.

FHSBLogoThe FHSB is about to start an exciting project, it hopes to release the Constitution St Cemetery, Peterhead MI’s in the New Year. Volunteers are needed to index, proof read and format the MI ready for production. Volunteers are urgently needed to assist in this exciting project. All you need is a PC with MS Word, spare hours and determination. You do not even need to be local, if you can help please contact Alan on the administrator’s email address....

 

17 Dec 08 Open Meeting

His talk will be on the Boer War (1899 - 1902) and the Records of the Gordon Highlander’s Museum. The Meeting will start at 19:00 in the Arbuthnot House, Broad Street, Peterhead.

7 Dec 08 - 1841 Census

yorkshire_census1The FHSB has acquired the 1841 Census, on microfilm for Aberdeenshire and St Fergus, Banff. This resource is available free of charge to all members in the FHC. We now have the 1801 (Peterhead), 1841 (Aberdeenshire & St Fergus), 1851 (Aberdeenshire) and the 1881 (UK) Census available within the FHC

 

5 Dec 08 - Database Update

FHSBLogoAnother 800 new records have just been added to the database. These new records result from members submitting Ancestor Charts to the FHC. The database has now nearly 5300 records. The FHSB database is held in the FHC and members may access it themselves or contact the FHC and ask for the details of a record to be forwarded to them. An index of this database is located within the Member’s Area. Could all members, who have not done so already, please submit their charts soonest

 

1 Dec 08 - Christmas and New Year Arrangements

santas-workshopThe FHSB wishes all it’s members and their families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The Family History Centre will close on 22 Dec 08 and re-open on the 05 Jan 09. Visitors traveling to the Buchan Area, wishing to use the Centre should contact the FHC Manager and arrange an appointment. Details are on the Contacts Page. Appointments can only be made when the Arbuthnot Museum is open.

 

4 Nov 08 - FHSB reaches it Century

8 Oct 08 - Open Evening

meetingThe FHSB hosted an Open Evening in Arbuthnot House in Peterhead where the guest speakers were Shirley Dickie our local Registrar and Rita Gordon our Family History Centre Manager. The talks were highly informative and interesting. The FHSB would like to extend a special welcome to the 5 new members that joined on the evening. Our thanks go to Shirley and Rita for all their efforts.

 

8 Oct 08 - Aberdeenshire 1837 Trade Directory

cdToday the FHSB obtained the above publication. It lists all the tradesmen within the towns and villages within Aberdeenshire including a brief description of the said towns and villages. All members can utilise this resource within the FHC.

 

3 Oct 08 - Open Meeting 9th October

FHSBLogoThe Family History Society of Buchan will be holding its next open meeting on Thursday 9th October at Arbuthnot House in Peterhead at 7pm. This time we will have two speakers; Shirley Dickie, our local Registrar, will be giving us an insight into the records she has available for the family researcher in the registrars office in Peterhead, and Rita Gordon will be talking about other records available for the local area, such as the Poor Law registers . Aug/Sep 08 - St Fergus MI’s

gravestoneOver a weekend in August the Society started to record the MI’s in St Fergus Churchyard. The weather was very kind to us and over a quarter of the graveyard was recorded. Next trip to St Fergus will be the 27th Sep 08. St Fergus Kirkyard is locally known as the ‘Pirate’s Gravies’ and is renown for the skull and crossbones appearing on many of the gravestones. Any volunteers please contact Anne.
