Historically, the people of the north east corner of Scotland are able to offer a great bonus to the family heritage seeker or genealogist. For many years access to and from the area was difficult other than by sea.

Many of the families in the area had little stock to choose from and so a close knit fraternity developed and those who have studied the area will be well aware of the ‘tee-name’ system frequently used to identify family members, all of whom have the same surnames. In 1590 there were fewer than 40 families living in Peterhead.  The population today is around 19,000.

Pigot’s Directory of 1825 speaks of Peterhead as being ‘a high ranking commercial town … with many commodious and elegant houses …’ and lists a number of prominent people of the day.If your roots are in Peterhead then many of the family names listed in 1825 can still be found in the town and connections maybe there, waiting to be establishedPlaceholder Image

The Family History Society of Buchan promotes the study of genealogy and family history within the historic county of Buchan. It does so from it’s new Family History Centre within the Arbuthnot Museum in Peterhead. The Society was formed in 2008 and already boasts members from all over the world.
